Alaska State Licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)
Below you’ll find information needed to apply for state licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) after completion of the Master of Science in Nursing/Family Nurse Practitioner (MSN/FNP) program. Graduates of the MSN/FNP are eligible to apply for the state Nurse Practitioner (NP) licensure.

Licensure:
Must hold a current, active registered nurse (RN) license in good standing in the state of Alaska.

Education:
Satisfactory completion of a formal accredited graduate educational course of study preparing in the APRN role of nurse practitioner.

National Certification:
Candidates must hold a current certification granted by a national certification body recognized by the Alaska Board of Nursing. The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners/Family Nurse Practitioner and the American Nurses Credentialing Center/Family Nurse Practitioner certification programs are recognized by the Board and candidates may obtain certification through one of these organizations. Certification is issued upon passage of an examination and meeting all other certification requirements.

Arizona State Certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)

Below you’ll find information needed to apply for state certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) after completion of the Master of Science in Nursing/Family Nurse Practitioner (MSN/FNP) program. Graduates of the MSN/FNP are eligible to apply for the state Nurse Practitioner (NP) certification. The MSN/FNP program is approved by the Arizona State Board of Nursing ().

PRESCRIBING AND DISPENSING AUTHORITY: Prescribing and dispensing (P&D) authority require additional authorization from the Arizona State Board of Nursing and payment of additional fees. Applicants may apply at the same time as for initial certification, however, note that Arizona requires its applicants for prescribing and P&D authority must have completed 45 contact hours of education within 3 years immediately preceding the P&D application covering either or both of pharmacology and clinical management of drug therapy.

Colorado State Requirements for Inclusion on the Advanced Practice Registry (APR)

Florida State Licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)

Indiana State Licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)

Indiana does not provide for a separate Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license or application without prescribing privileges. The “APRN” license in Indiana is only for the additional authority to prescribe as an APRN. The ý Master of Science in Nursing/Family Nurse Practitioner (MSN/FNP) program provides the education necessary to practice as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) under the applicant’s Indiana or out-of-state compact registered nursing (RN) license.

Applicants who wish to obtain prescriptive authority should contact the Indiana Board of Nursing for information on the requirements and process for obtaining that authority.

Licensure:
Must hold a current, active registered nurse (RN) license in good standing in the state of Indiana or in a compact party state with multistate privileges.

Education:
Completion of a graduate program offered by a college or university accredited by the Commission on Recognition of Postsecondary Accreditation (COPR) which prepares the registered nurse to practice as a nurse practitioner. The ý is accredited by the successor agency of the COPR, the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Application:
There is no application to practice as an advanced practice registered nurse unless prescriptive authority is desired. Please contact the Board for more information.

Michigan State Certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)

  • Good moral character questions: Documentation will be required if the applicant answers “yes” to either question to show at the current time they have the ability to, and are likely to, serve the public in a fair, honest, and open manner, that they are rehabilitated, or that the substance of the former offense is not reasonably related to the occupation or profession for which the applicant is seeking a license.

(5) Role preparation in one identified population focus area of practice.

(6) APRN core content including legal, ethical, and professional responsibilities of the APRN.

(7) Curriculum consistent with competencies of the specific areas of practice.

(8) A minimum of 500 supervised clinical hours as defined by the Board. The supervised experience shall have been directly related to the role and population focus area of licensure and include pharmacotherapeutic management of patients.

Indiana State Licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)

Indiana does not provide for a separate Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license or application without prescribing privileges. The “APRN” license in Indiana is only for the additional authority to prescribe as an APRN. (1) Three separate, dedicated graduate level courses in:

(A) Advanced health assessment that includes assessment of all human systems, advanced assessment techniques, concepts and approaches;

(B) Advanced pharmacology that includes pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacotherapeutics of all broad categories of agents; and

(C) Advanced physiology and pathophysiology, including general principles that apply across the lifespan.

(2) Diagnosis and management of diseases and conditions across practice settings, including diseases representative of all systems appropriate to the role and population focus area of licensure.

(3) Preparation that provides a basic understanding of the principles for decision making in the identified role.

(4) Preparation in the core competencies for the identified APRN role.

(5) Role preparation in one identified population focus area of practice.

(6) APRN core content including legal, ethical, and professional responsibilities of the APRN.

(7) Curriculum consistent with competencies of the specific areas of practice.

(8) A minimum of 500 supervised clinical hours as defined by the Board. The supervised experience shall have been directly related to the role and population focus area of licensure and include pharmacotherapeutic management of patients.

National Certification:
Candidates must take and pass the appropriate APRN national certification examination in the APRN role and population focus congruent with the candidate's educational preparation. Only those national certification examination(s) recognized by the Texas Board of Nursing for each APRN role and population focus area will be accepted. Certification must always remain current.
